BMW's idea for security is not to use keys. Instead, they have come up with something which they call the Key Reader Version 2.41 (SAM). The SAM is a device that you plug into your car and then put your finger on it while it reads your fingerprint to unlock the car door and start the vehicle. BMWs are famous for their luxurious features, but many people find this new development a bit excessive. The general opinion amongst BMW owners seems to be that BMWs should stick with what works - it's been pretty successful so far! Some other models have been using these types of keyless systems for years now and have faced almost no problems whatsoever. The latest generation of the BMW Key Reader Version 2.41 (SAM) is said to offer another level of complexity, as it is now necessary to have a valid fingerprint to start the engine. There are further concerns that this could pose trouble to people who are unable to take their own fingerprints, such as senior citizens, athletes with swollen fingers, or those who have lost digits due to injury etc. The older versions did not require a finger print to start the engine.
